The Greek 8+ National Team was the winner of the Two Nations Cup Rowing 2011, after an exciting race against the Turkish squad on Istanbul's Golden Horn, which was held on Sunday, October 23rd.
Starting off at the Galata Bridge, which was crowded by fans, the two crews completed the 3061m route, accompanied by Organizing Committee's boats and the special "VIP Media Boat". After a balanced start, the Greek team took a steady lead off of the 1500m mark, which it never gave up until the end of the distance, reaching the finish line at Balat Park first with the time 7:57.39, leaving the Turkish athletes behind with 8:01.87.
Minutes after the end of the race, the Greek rowers were well-received and applauded by their Turkish fellow athletes and the people who attended the ensuing award ceremony, and received the Two Nations Cup trophy from Fatih Mayor, Mustafa Demir. The Greek Rowing Federation President, Mr. Ioannis Karras, as well as the TRF President, Mr. Ilhami Isseven were honored by the Organizing Committee, who both expressed their appreciation to the organizers of the event and underlined its significance.
At the end of the ceremony, the athletes exchanged presents, wished each other luck for their preparation towards the 2012 Olympics in London and committed themselves to come together again next year for the Two Nations Cup Rowing 2012 in Greece.
